Why St George Beckons to Us All

What is it that beckons most to come and visit St George Utah? As a recent transplant to the area I think I’ve come to understand a little bit about why people love it here so much, and what makes them want to return so much.

Before arriving in St George I lived in Salt Lake City Utah, which is a great place to live, but during the winter months it can get a little dreary. Especially when the inversion kicks in and you aren’t afforded a view of the sun for weeks on end. That’s when I first began to feel the pull of St George and her sunny weather. Now don’t get me wrong, I love skiing, and I do love the snow, but having the opportunity to get out of it every once and awhile is a welcome mat to me.

There is much to do in the somewhat small southern Utah town. From hiking and biking, to Rhino rides and ATV tours, to wakeboarding and fishing. Sand Hollow state park is a reservoir that is a jewel in the southwest. If offers both a pristine lake to go fishing and boating on, but is complimented by a sand dune area to take your ATV’s on. The beaches are warm and inviting, and when you get there you won’t believe the beauty that is offered by the Pine Valley Mountains in the distance. They seem to perfectly frame the picture that is southern Utah.

The other great advantage that St George offers is it being a hub for so many national parks. With the obvious one of Zion being so close, but beyond the splendor that is Zion there are national monuments like Cedar Breaks within an hour. And parts of the Grand Canyon are within an hour or two as well. Then if you widen your gap slightly to include places within just a few hours you get Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and so many others. Truly St George is a hub for so many different places that go way beyond Zion.

There are a multitude of art festivals that add variety and excitement, as well as culture and education. One of my favorite art festivals is one they have during the Easter weekend. They have art from all over the southwest. If you like art then this is a show to see.

Now that I live here in St George I’ve come to see even more what people are missing out on when they don’t get a chance to visit this wonderful little town. It offers so many places to go, things to do, and places to eat. And the people are friendly and inviting. If you are looking for somewhere to take your family for a vacation, this little town is your place.
